The dates to keep in mind
Adobe publishes the lifecycle of each version of Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source. When a version leaves regular support, it stops receiving security and quality patches. These are the end-of-regular-support dates for the 2.4 line according to Adobe’s documentation:
- 2.4.6: ended on 11 August 2026.
- 2.4.7: ends on 31 May 2027.
- 2.4.8: ends on 31 May 2028.
- 2.4.9: ends on 31 May 2029.
Upgrade or migrate
If your store runs 2.4.6 or earlier, the question is no longer whether to act, but how. A version upgrade on Adobe Commerce means reviewing modules, customisations and integrations, and repeating it every few years. It is the natural moment to ask whether staying is worth it.
On Shopify there are no versions to upgrade: Shopify maintains the server, security and checkout. In exchange, the core can’t be changed, and very specific needs are solved with apps or development around it.
When moving to Shopify Plus pays off
These are the signs we see most often in brands that end up migrating.
- Technical maintenance eats up much of the budget that could go to selling.
- Every change to the store depends on the development team and takes weeks.
- A major version upgrade is due and modules need rewriting.
- You want to open new markets quickly, with languages, currencies and prices per country.
- The B2B you need fits what Shopify Plus offers: catalogues, prices and terms per customer.
When it makes sense to stay on Adobe Commerce
Adobe Commerce is still the best option in some cases: very large catalogues with complex pricing logic, B2B with very specific approval and quoting workflows, or companies with an in-house technical team that makes use of that flexibility.
If that is your case, the sensible move is to plan the upgrade to a version with long support and review the maintenance cost every year.
How to compare the cost
The Shopify Plus fee starts at 2,300 dollars a month according to its official page. Adobe Commerce has its own licence, except Magento Open Source, which has no fee but does have hosting and maintenance costs.
The right comparison is the total cost over three years for each option: licence, hosting, maintenance, upgrades, apps or modules, and team. At Misako, after migrating, the annual maintenance cost fell by 80% and opening a new market went from about 30 days to 3 or 4. At Footdistrict, which came from Adobe Commerce, revenue grew by 14% and returning customers by 28%.
How to migrate without losing rankings
A migration is won or lost on 301 redirects, data and integrations. We explain it step by step in how to migrate to Shopify without losing SEO.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if my Magento loses support?
The store keeps working, but it no longer receives security and quality patches from Adobe. The risk of security issues and incompatibilities with external services increases.
Do you lose SEO when migrating from Magento to Shopify?
Not necessarily. With a complete 301 redirect map and the content carried over, rankings are maintained.
Is Shopify suitable for B2B?
Shopify Plus includes native B2B: catalogues, prices and payment terms per business customer in the same store. Very specific workflows need to be validated case by case.
